Description

Period: Colonial

Description: In the Red River Settlement, it would appear that the men of the Settlement, as well as the officers of the two great fur companies, for winter wear, favored great coats as opposed to capotes. Indeed, Northwesters were referred to as “Greycoats” whereas their Hudson’s Bay Company counterparts were referred to as “Bluecoats”. Whether this means that there was somewhat of a uniform code or not, is up to interpretation. Since no surviving garments exist, we have had to take the European counterpart as a basis for our pattem. Whether the gamient is referred to as a great coat or a box coat or a coachman’s coat or an overcoat or a trusty or a surtout – is immaterial. The coats were heavy, at least water repellent, wind-proof, and most importantly, were warm.
